World Athletics has utilized artificial intelligence to offer year-round protection to 25 athletes who have been identified as highly targeted individuals for abuse on social media platforms during major events. The governing body conducted a study over the past four years, analyzing over 1.4 million posts or comments directed at 2,438 track, field, and road athletes. The study focused on comments and targeted abuse, excluding direct messaging or non-targeted abuse. World Athletics has not disclosed the identities of the 25 athletes receiving protection and plans to expand support in the future. World Athletics president Lord Coe emphasized the organization’s commitment to athlete welfare and proactive measures to safeguard athletes against online abuse.
