Suriname’s president has announced a program of “royalties for everyone” as the country prepares for the economic benefits of recently discovered oil and gas reserves. Suriname, along with its neighbor Guyana, expects to earn billions from offshore crude deposits. Guyana recently announced cash payouts to all adult citizens as part of redistributing its oil wealth. Suriname, with a population of 600,000, is projected to make around $10 billion in the next decade or two. The country currently faces high poverty rates, with almost one in five people living in poverty. French oil group Total has announced a multi-billion dollar project to exploit an oil field off the coast of Suriname, with production expected to start in 2028. President Chan Santokhi has promised that every Surinamese citizen will benefit from the oil and gas revenues, with each person receiving $750 in a savings account with an annual interest rate of seven percent. The country is taking steps to avoid the “oil curse” by setting up a sovereign wealth fund, following the example of countries like Norway.
