Fashion models, including top names like Christy Turlington, Helena Christensen, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Beverly Johnson, have come together to send an open letter to New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The letter urges the governor to sign the Fashion Workers Act, a bill that aims to provide models with protection from sexual harassment, discrimination, and AI exploitation. The bill, which has already passed in the New York assembly and Senate, needs Governor Hochul’s signature before the deadline of 24 December.
The Model Alliance, an organization advocating for the labor rights of models in the US, has been working on this legislation since 2022. The bill seeks to address power imbalances between models and agencies, particularly concerning financial transparency and visa sponsorship for immigrant models. Executive director Sara Ziff emphasized the importance of this bill in ensuring a safe and equitable work environment in the fashion industry.
The AI provisions in the bill aim to protect models’ digital replicas from unauthorized use, similar to concerns raised by Hollywood workers in a previous strike. While actors and screenwriters have union representation to negotiate consent and compensation for AI use, models currently lack the ability to unionize due to their classification as independent contractors. The Fashion Workers Act is seen as a crucial step in providing models with essential rights and protections in the industry.
