Lee Anderson has been ordered to apologise for breaching Parliament’s bullying and harassment policy after twice swearing at a security officer. An investigation found that the Reform UK MP for Ashfield “verbally insulted” the guard twice when asked to show his pass as he tried to enter the Parliamentary estate in November 2023. Despite initially dismissing the allegations and calling the investigation biased, Anderson later admitted using inappropriate language, attributing it to “challenging personal circumstances” that day. Following the ruling by the Independent Expert Panel, Anderson apologised to the Commons and the officer, promising that such behavior will not happen again. The security officer reported that Anderson swore at him, claiming special treatment, and swore again when asked to show his pass. Despite denying the allegations at first, Anderson was found guilty by the standards commissioner and ordered to apologize in the Commons and in writing to the security officer. The watchdog highlighted the power imbalance between the MP and the officer and emphasized the importance of treating security staff with respect. Anderson accepted the findings and expressed remorse, pledging to learn from the incident and improve his behavior in the future.
