Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security has reported that a suspected arson attack at a cafe and karaoke bar in Hanoi has resulted in the tragic deaths of 11 people and injuries to two others. The perpetrator, who was arrested by authorities, confessed to starting the fire on the ground floor of the building following a dispute with staff. Rescue workers managed to bring seven individuals out of the burning building, with two of them being rushed to the hospital for treatment. The incident, captured in footage circulating on social media, showed the multistorey building engulfed in flames as firefighters battled the blaze amidst a crowd of onlookers. Tragically, many people were unable to escape due to the rapid spread of the fire. This devastating event highlights the dangers of fires in Vietnam’s densely populated urban areas, with statistics revealing a significant number of casualties in recent years. The country has seen numerous fire-related incidents, including a deadly fire at an apartment block in Hanoi last year, which claimed the lives of 56 individuals. In another tragic incident, a court in Binh Duong province convicted six individuals, including police officers, for safety lapses that led to a fire at a karaoke complex resulting in the deaths of 32 people in 2022.
