Albania has announced a one-year ban on TikTok following the killing of a teenager last month that raised fears over the influence of social media on children. Prime Minister Edi Rama confirmed the ban as part of a broader plan to make schools safer, after meeting with parents’ groups and teachers. The decision comes after a 14-year-old schoolboy was stabbed to death by a fellow pupil, with reports suggesting the incident was fueled by arguments on social media, including TikTok. Rama has blamed social media, particularly TikTok, for fueling violence among youths in and outside school. Several European countries have enforced restrictions on social media for children, and Australia recently approved a complete social media ban for children under 16. The ban in Albania is expected to come into effect early next year.
