California Governor Gavin Newsom is proposing to offer state tax rebates for electric vehicle (EV) purchases in response to the possible elimination of the federal EV tax credit by the Trump administration. The new rebate program would be funded by the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which is supported by polluters under the state’s cap-and-trade program. California has been a leader in clean vehicles, with over 2 million zero-emission vehicles sold. The previous Clean Vehicle Rebate Program offered rebates as high as $2,500 for electric cars. Newsom is expected to provide more details about the proposed rebate program in Kern County. The goal of the new program is to promote innovation and competition in the zero-emission vehicles market.
