Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has announced that Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina who was sentenced to death for drug trafficking in Indonesia, will finally be coming home after years of diplomatic efforts. Veloso, a domestic helper, was arrested in 2010 for attempting to smuggle heroin and has maintained her innocence, claiming she was tricked by a recruiter. In 2015, she was granted a last-minute reprieve from execution and now, after a long and difficult journey, she will be returning to the Philippines. Marcos praised the partnership between the Philippines and Indonesia in ensuring justice and compassion for Veloso. Indonesia has strict penalties for drug trafficking, but Veloso’s case has stirred outrage in the Philippines, with many seeing her as a victim of exploitation. Marcos expressed his anticipation in welcoming her back home and acknowledged the challenges she faced as a mother trapped in poverty who made a desperate choice.
