Argentina has ordered the arrest of 61 Brazilian citizens for their involvement in the 2023 storming of government buildings in Brasília by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Two individuals have already been arrested in Argentina and face extradition to Brazil. The incident, which occurred a week after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office, saw thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invade and ransack the Congress building, presidential palace, and supreme court. Some rioters fled to Argentina in hopes of evading legal consequences. The riots were likened to the 2021 attack on the US Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. Brazilian authorities have arrested around 3,000 individuals in connection to the riots, with half still in custody. The recent attempted bomb attack on the Brazil supreme court has reignited political violence and deterred Congress from considering amnesty for participants in the 2023 attacks.
