Elon Musk has expanded his lawsuit against the ChatGPT maker OpenAI, adding federal antitrust and other claims and adding OpenAI’s largest financial backer, Microsoft, as a defendant. The amended lawsuit, filed in federal court in California, alleges that Microsoft and OpenAI sought to monopolize the market for generative artificial intelligence and sideline competitors. Musk accuses OpenAI and its CEO of violating contract provisions and putting profits ahead of the public good. The lawsuit aims to void OpenAI’s license with Microsoft and force them to divest “ill-gotten” gains. OpenAI has called the lawsuit baseless, while Microsoft declined to comment. Musk’s attorney claims that Microsoft’s anticompetitive practices have escalated, and the lawsuit alleges violations of antitrust laws. Musk’s opposition to OpenAI stems from his co-founding of the startup and its subsequent funding from Microsoft. The lawsuit also mentions Musk’s involvement in the Trump administration and accuses OpenAI and Microsoft of conditioning investment opportunities on agreements not to deal with rivals. OpenAI has accused Musk of harassing them for his own competitive advantage.
